When Booking A Trip Should I Search For Last Minute Deals Online Or Should I Go Through A Travel Agent?

My friend and I have spontaneously decided to go on a spur of the moment vacation within the next few weeks. We are both students who have not traveled much and don’t know if it would be better to go through a travel agent or find something online. We are looking for something affordable and safe but do not know where to begin. Help!
